December - 2005 Central United Methodist Church at 3rd Ave. and Morgan St. has been added to the National Historic Register. The following is an excerpt from the Knoxville News Sentinel: "In a time when we are tearing down our old structures this puts the spotlight on these properties and points out just how significant they are," said Cherel Henderson, executive director of the East Tennessee Historical Society. "Therefore, we are more likely to protect them."
In naming Central United Methodist Church individually to the national list, the THC said it is "architecturally significant in itself." The church was built in 1926 and is an example of Gothic Revival architecture, designed by the R. H. Hunt and Co. architectural firm of Chattanooga. The church, with a limestone foundation, is constructed of stone, brick and marble trim and takes up an entire city block, facing East Third Avenue. It is bounded by Morgan and Lamar streets. At the time the church was built, it was the center of the population of Knoxville, says the THC application used in naming the church to the national list.
The church was created through the merger of two historic churches - Broad Street Church and Centenary Church. The Rev. John W. Carnes and the Rev. George D. French organized Broad Street Church on Nov. 10, 1870.

September - 2005 Sassy Ann's announces event to benefit blind bluesman; invitation information is:
Just want to invite everyone to Sassy Ann's Saturday October 1 to hear "Braille Blues Daddy" Bryan Lee and his band. He has lived and played in New Orleans for 20+ years and his home is now underwater, plus the homes of 2 other band members. They evacuated New Orleans before the hurricane, but now their jobs and homes are gone. Bryan has probably also lost his collection of vintage guitars, along with everything else.
We will turn over the proceeds of the door to him this night, and are asking for donations as the spirit moves. We are also collecting donations for them for the month of Sept. at the door, and like some of us who prefer to donate to needs directly rather than give to corporate charities with multimillion dollar salaries for CEOs and enormous administrative overhead, we know every penny will go to help these musicians in need. The show will begin at 9:30 with the upstairs bar opening at 7PM.
Thank you.

August - 2005 TDOT opens neighborhood project office; Fourth & Gill neighbor comments:
"As a neighborhood resident I want to say today that no groups have worked harder over the past decade to see this project completed than the business and residential communities that surround the project. It was dusty around here yesterday and muddier today, but we are moving forward. On behalf of the residents I want to thank Gov. Bredsen and his new TDOT management for working hard to improve the design relative to neighborhoods and the city. I also want to thank Rep. Harry Tindell for pushing for many of hte many meetings to get these improvements.
The opening of this office in the middle of the work is the beginning of seeing that the design intentions carry through to the completed work. We as residents look forward to continue working with the State and the city in making this highway improvement a plus for everyone involved. Thanks." Dwight Guinn
July - 2005 Fourth & Gill pub has Knoxville's best Margarita!
Neighborhood blues bar Sassy Ann's was voted to have our fair city's #1 Margarita. According to MetroPulse: "Oddly enough, the best margarita in Knoxville is not found at one of its many Mexican restaurants, though Chez Guevara and Señor Taco tie for a close second, and both have excellent food. But the mother of all margaritas in town is Little Vicki’s Top Shelf Special at Sassy Ann’s in the Fourth and Gill neighborhood. Vicki, a long-time bartender at this true neighborhood bar, rubs her hands together and her feisty eyes light up when you order one, as if to say, “You’re not going to regret this.” It takes a good hour to down the sucker, and don’t ever order more than one or two, unless you hope to be hugging the toilet in your near future. She makes ‘em strong, but the smooth and salty flavor is not overtly mangled by the tequila. Order a steak too, as the food at Sassy’s is not your typical bar fare."
